Thin crate slats and small display-box parts can look fine on the front and still break out on the back when a drill bit or screw tip leaves the wood. The damage is usually small, but it can leave a ragged edge that catches a finger or makes a neat repair look rushed.

A backer strip is just a sacrificial scrap held tight behind the piece you are drilling, fastening or lightly sawing. It gives the fibres somewhere to land as the bit exits, which reduces tear-out and keeps the show face calmer.

Choose a backer that is flat, clean and softer than the finished part if possible. Clamp it, tape it or hold it firmly enough that there is no gap between the repair piece and the scrap. Even a thin gap can let the wood lift and splinter.

For pilot holes, drill through the crate part and just into the backer. For screws, test the depth first so the point does not punch farther than planned. If the backer gets chewed up, slide to a fresh spot rather than drilling into an old crater.

This habit is especially useful around handles, dividers and replacement slats where the wood is narrow and the hole is close to an edge. It also makes sanding easier afterward because there is less torn grain to clean up.

Practical takeaway: before drilling thin crate repairs, put a scrap backer tight behind the work. It costs almost nothing, protects the exit side, and helps a small repair look intentional instead of patched in a hurry.
