A wooden crate can be strong and still feel unfinished if the screw heads sit proud. They catch on a sleeve, scrape a shelf, or make a hand slide over the edge a little less comfortably than it should.

The fix is not to drive harder at the end. That can strip the hole, crush a soft face, or leave a shiny ring where the driver slipped. A cleaner habit is to treat the countersink as its own small setup before the real parts are assembled.

Take an offcut from the same material and drill the pilot hole you plan to use. Add the countersink lightly, drive one matching screw, and run a fingertip across it. You are looking for a head that is just flush or barely below the surface, not buried in a crater.

If the screw is still proud, give the countersink a touch more depth and test again. If the rim looks ragged, back off the pressure, clear chips more often, or try a sharper bit. The scrap will tell you more honestly than the finished crate face will.

This matters on repairs too. Older crate wood can be dry, uneven, or already marked from previous hardware. A one-minute test on scrap helps you choose a pilot and countersink that hold well without making the repair look overworked.

Practical takeaway: before fastening visible crate parts, make one countersink test in matching scrap. It saves the show face, keeps screw heads from snagging, and makes a simple box feel more carefully finished.
