Small crate repairs have a way of spreading across the bench. A driver bit rolls behind a clamp, the pencil lands under a slat, and the one small square you need is suddenly hiding under the work instead of helping it.
One low-cost fix is to mount a short magnetic strip near the repair area or on the inside face of a tool tote. It gives the small metal things a visible parking spot: driver bits, countersink, brad-point bit, awl, small rule or the screws for the next corner.
The strip works best when it is treated as temporary staging, not long-term storage. Before a repair starts, place only the tools and fasteners needed for that job on the strip. When the crate is back together, clear the strip before the next task begins.
That little reset prevents mix-ups. A countersink for one screw size does not get confused with another, old screws do not blend into new ones, and the bench stays easier to sweep because fewer small parts are lying flat on the surface.
If the strip is mounted on a portable tote, it can follow the work to a display table, packing bench or finishing area. Just keep it away from cards, phones and anything that should not sit beside a magnet.
Practical takeaway: give the smallest metal tools one obvious magnetic parking spot. It saves searching, reduces dropped hardware and makes a simple crate repair feel calmer from start to finish.
