Skip steel wool when preparing a water-based box finish

Tiny steel fibres can leave rust specks under a water-based finish. Choose a suitable abrasive and test your preparation on an offcut first.

A little wooden box can feel beautifully smooth and still have a finishing problem waiting in its corners. Steel wool sheds fine fibres, and some can lodge in the grain or around a joint. Add a water-based finish and those leftovers can rust, leaving specks that are much harder to deal with once they are under a coating.

Before reaching for an abrasive, read the finish maker’s preparation instructions. For bare wood, use the recommended sandpaper type and grit sequence. For smoothing between coats, use the specified paper or a suitable non-metallic abrasive pad only when the instructions call for it. A pad’s colour is not a universal grit rating, so check its label rather than guessing.

Keep a clean abrasive for this job. A pad that has already rubbed metal hardware may carry particles you do not want on the wood. Remove hinges or other fittings where practical, keeping their screws together, so the wood can be prepared without dragging the abrasive across metal edges.

Clear the sanding dust with suitable dust extraction and a clean, soft brush, paying attention to lid rebates and inside corners. Follow the coating instructions for any final wipe; an oily or waxy cloth can introduce another problem. Wear suitable eye and dust protection while sanding, and provide the ventilation required by the finish.

Try the full preparation and coating sequence on an offcut from the same wood before touching the box. Let it dry as directed and inspect it in good light. If you have already used steel wool, stop and clean the surface thoroughly before coating; do not assume that covering a visible dark speck will make it disappear. On a valuable piece, get finishing advice before sanding away an existing finish.

Practical takeaway: keep steel wool out of the preparation kit for a water-based box finish. A labelled, clean abrasive and one test offcut are simpler than trying to remove rust freckles from an otherwise tidy lid.
