A good wooden crate does more than hold things. It turns a practical object into part of the presentation. For a shop, winery, brewery, farm stand or maker, the package can become the display.
Wood has a few advantages that are easy to forget: it is repairable, it can be branded, it handles repeated use, and it feels less disposable than plastic. Even when the crate is simple, the look says something about the business behind it.
The trick is to design for the real use. A counter display crate does not need the same build as a field box. A gift crate may need clean edges and branding. A working crate needs handles, stackability and strength first.
That is the kind of practical thinking this blog will return to: useful things, made simply, with enough care that they keep working.
